MBABANE – Team Eswatini wrapped up the Lesotho National Youth Games in style, returning home with an impressive 12 medals from the competition held in Maseru last week.
The tournament, now in its second edition, brought together athletes from the two kingdoms for a friendly contest that ran from Thursday until Saturday.
Eswatini’s delegation, coordinated by the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA), featured 12 athletes competing across four disciplines. They delivered an outstanding performance, securing seven gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Athletics emerged as the standout sport, contributing four golds to the tally. The squad was supported by four coaches, while star sprinter Sibusiso “Swazi Bolt” Matsenjwa took up the role of Chef de Mission.
The medal rush began on Friday through boxing. Male fighter Calvin Gumbi advanced to the final after winning his opening bout, while female boxer Nothando Mshayise was placed directly in the final due to limited entries in her division. Both went on to triumph in their respective categories, each claiming gold for the kingdom.
With this strong showing, Team Eswatini not only showcased their growing sporting talent but also strengthened competitive ties with neighbouring Lesotho through the youth-focused event.
